It’s just some shitty bar on the outside. The owner came from Johto some thirty years ago. In that time, while Hoenn has changed and the world along with it, a young man turned old. He perfected his craft. This place is sacred ground. Gangs, Rockets, pigs, everybody who knows about this tiny little bar put their differences aside here. Some things in life are just too good to pass up. A bowl of ramen like this is one of the.[break][break]

Navy pulls up a seat at the bar, orders something with lots of meat, noodles, and salt. Garlic, too. He thanks Arceus he isn’t planning on kissing Kouji, or he’d be in for a world of trouble after eating a meal like this. They’re both beaten up after the fight. They’ve got the prize money to spend.[break][break]

He’s always been terrible with money. What’s with this habit he’s forming of spending his winnings on the people he beats? It’s not productive. Still, it’s his treat. Something’s off about the guy.[break][break]

“Yeesh. You’re the one who taught me this lesson, kid. Don’t pretend to be things that you’re not. Thing about smart people is, out thinking most of ‘em’s a losing job. Don’t try to outthink them. Understand them. What makes ‘em tick. What they care about. Where their weaknesses are. Let instinct do the rest. You’ve got good instincts, good muscles backing ‘em up.” He turns from his meal, studying Kouji. The detective prays this turn grabs his attention. Kouji's face hovered perilously close to his bowl of ramen, his mind awash with countless retorts. Yet, a bitter realization swept over him; wasn't he becoming a hypocrite? He wanted to be raw iron, so he could become whatever he wished to be. Maybe he didn’t really get what Zev Harcourt had been saying to him, but he didn’t get a lot of things.

The streak of failures, a pile of them he could stack to the moon and back in the span of a month and a half. Yet it was the man he had fought at the start of the road that had taught him the lesson that he had been spouting himself from the start. Just where’d he go wrong?

The rapid movement in the corner of his eye caused his muscles to tense, years of training caused him to move, the jab that was shot towards his face was intercepted by his left elbow, his fist followed that same arc until he stopped just inches from Navy’s face.

”Y’mean like that? Fuck’s sake.” He said as he clicked his teeth, a loud sound that echoed in that small place; he turned to his bowl of ramen and devoured it, functionally drinking down the noodles and broth both until he slammed it down onto the table, a loud sough.

”Darn it, that’s still brainy, you idiot. I don’t need someone else telling me how to be me.” He said with a shrug, as if shaking off some of the doubts he had accrued. ”Ain’t got a choice though, I gotta climb up, that means becoming a better me. It’s just like prepping for a robbery, gotta know where to break in.”

An old man shouts at them in a thick Johto accent. Both warriors regard one another. Navy pulls himself free, all smiles once again. He turns and goes back to eating his food. Listening. His stomach growls. Arceus, but he didn’t realize how hungry he truly was.[break][break]
“Sorry, ole timer. Hand slipped.” He says to the owner. The man gives him a stink-eye, settles on a ‘don’t do that again’ look, and gets back to his food. The other hoodlums, cops, and toughs in the place all look at the duo before returning to their conversations. No one wants any trouble. Uniting these two is a dangerous proposition no one wants.[break][break]
“Then get to figuring it out. Beat that iron until it takes shape. Otherwise, all that stuff you want doesn’t mean shit.” There’s a mirror hanging over them – a trick so that the owner can keep his eye on everyone in a covert way. Navy finds them. Finds his own eyes. Speaks to Kouji and that reflection.[break][break]
“The world you want doesn’t mean shit if you’re not strong enough to defend it.”

The tense atmosphere in the bar began to dissipate with the words from the owner, Kouji’s eyes went to the mirror above and raised his eyebrow slightly, the reasons for having such a thing there were beyond obvious; but he placed his chopsticks on his now finished bowl of ramen. ”Hey, Ol’ Man, lemme get some Gyoza, and a drink to wash it down.” He said as he leaned his cheek against his fist before he winced at the feeling of pain, signs of a forming bruise, whether it was on his fist, or on his cheek, who could say?

The weight of his aspirations pressed against his palm, a symbol of his determination. As his thoughts wandered, his fist opened up, and his fingertips traced the textured surface of the wooden counter, the subtle roughness grounding him in the present, momentarily soothing his mind.

”Y’know, I really want to hit you right now; but I want Gyoza some more. Gotta be all right and stuff.” He said as he cracked his neck both ways, pondering just what he sought in truth.

”Haaaah. Fuck it, being the smith and the sword, I guess I’ll need to do both if I want that world.” His gaze returned to the table, but before long, a plate slid noiselessly in front of him. His soon returned back to Navy, wordlessly going for his gyoza before he popped it into his mouth.

He’s as far removed from the mountaintop as an ant is from a human. There’s a terribly high climb before him. Navy’s own dessert takes the shape of a cola. Something carbonated always sits well in his stomach. Takes the edge off in a way beer just can’t.[break][break]

“I’ve got a long way to go. Only one I’ve fought so far is Melody. She’s crafty. Real crafty.” He tosses a side-eye at Kouji, snorting at what he’s about to say. “Crafty as she is cute.” But the rest…[break][break]

“Fairburne’s a beast. Young’s got a great mind for strategy. Silph packs more firepower than anyone I’ve ever seen. Frankly, Hoenn’s gym challenge sucks. But its elite…” He leans back, running numbers through his head with arms crossed. He’s not in the business of speaking lies.[break][break]

“Pound for pound, best Elite 4 in the world. Fairburne by herself could take on Kanto or Johto’s elite 4s one vs. four. Young could probably sweep Galar’s annual tournament. Truth is, they’re all good enough to be champions. Guess that’s why Lopez is so crazy.”[break][break]

And he has to defeat them all. For Gabe. For himself. It’s going to be the fight of his life. If he’s to meet this young beast at the mountaintop, he’s got to climb.[break][break]

“It’s crazy to think that Lopez was once just like me. Tch…shouldn’t have been so lazy. Pretending to be a detective…” He laughs against the cola, despite his tone. He’s not sad. There’s no point in being sad about this. Life’s one big revolving door of wasted opportunities and missed shots. To achieve something, you miss out on other things.[break][break]
